Svitolina beats Anisimova to reach Toronto quarterfinals

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina advanced to the Toronto quarterfinals after a hard-fought victory over American Amanda Anisimova on August 8. The match, held at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, lasted one hour and 19 minutes, with Svitolina emerging victorious 6-2, 6-4. The young athlete converted five of her 14 break point opportunities and only dropped two games on her own serve.

This win marks Svitolina's second consecutive quarterfinal appearance in WTA 1000 tournaments. She claimed a title in this category during the Rome event in May of this year, and had previously won the Toronto tournament back in 2017. In the upcoming quarterfinal match, Svitolina will face Ekaterina Alexandrova, a neutral-status player with a Russian passport. Alexandrova had previously defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka by the scores of 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 the day before the match against Svitolina.

Svitolina leads their head-to-head series, having won three of their four previous encounters. Earlier in the tournament, fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk was eliminated by Iga Świątek in a grueling two-hour contest, as Świątek praised Kostyuk's performance, stating it was one of her best matches of the season.
