Survivor of Bukit Ho Swee fire, whose story was featured in 2021 NDP, passes away at 98

Tan Geok Han, who survived the Bukit Ho Swee fire in 1961, passed away at the age of 98 this week. Tan was one of the main characters featured in an animation created by director Boo Junfeng for Singapore's 2021 National Day Parade (NDP). Her story, along with others, highlighted the struggles faced by Singaporeans during adversity and how they persevered.

Tan, a seamstress, lost her home and livelihood during the fire but managed to salvage her Singer sewing machine from the rubble. This machine eventually became the means of providing for her family when she moved into a newly built HDB flat. Boo Junfeng shared the news of Tan's passing on social media, revealing that they had met Tan in 2021 and had maintained regular meetings, typically around Chinese New Year and National Day.

Tan affectionately referred to the team as her "Five Stars." Boo and his team visited Tan twice a year, cherishing her joyful spirit and wicked sense of humor, which remained strong despite her increasing ailments. After Tan's death, her son informed Boo of the sad news. Boo recalled Tan as a creative woman who continued to sketch and paint until her final years, eager to show the team her latest artwork.

Tan frequently reminded her visitors of the importance of not getting angry at others, a theme encapsulated in a handwritten folk poem she had pinned on her wall. Tan's life, intertwined with Boo's during the NDP project, showcased ordinary people making sacrifices for the betterment of their community. As Boo expressed his gratitude, he noted that Tan had led a long and fulfilling life, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and determination.
