On a sweltering day last August 8th, four citizens representing different generations sat across from Kim Jihyeon, the Economic and Social Labor Affairs Director, to discuss the topics of "demographic changes and jobs". While other citizens paired off to discuss their perspectives, the lively "Job Opportunity Dialogue" continued.

Kim, who led the discussion, stated that the purpose of this dialogue was to stimulate a stalemate in the labor negotiations. The 90-minute meeting included a young 20-something job-seeker, a middle-aged woman who had left her job, a woman who left her job early, and an older man in his 60s. Each person shared their work experiences and opinions on job policies.

The 20-year-old intern, Kim Jongjin, questioned the reasons for the difficulty in finding employment for young people, with Kim responding that the issue lies in the disparity between job opportunities. The 40-year-old working mother, Hwa Jeong, expressed her struggle to balance work and childcare, highlighting the need for policies that allow for re-entry into the workforce after a break.

The 50-year-old professional, Bong Seong-jun, proposed a system where seniors could work part-time alongside younger employees, allowing older workers to continue contributing while providing opportunities for younger people. The 66-year-old Kim Donyum, who was re-entering the workforce after a career break, echoed similar sentiments, arguing that age should not be a barrier to employment.

Kim Jongjin emphasized that while older workers bring valuable experience, it is essential to provide support for them to maintain a productive workforce. The discussion revealed that despite generational differences, there is a growing willingness to collaborate and support each other in the workforce. Kim, as the discussion facilitator, actively engaged all participants, listening to their perspectives and encouraging them to find common ground.
