S’poreans working behind the scenes make it possible for nation to celebrate National Day: Chan

Singaporeans working quietly behind the scenes have ensured the nation continues to celebrate National Day, Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing revealed at the Buona Vista National Day Observance Ceremony on Aug 9. In his address, Chan emphasized the uniform services, those in the economic sector responsible for essential supplies, and community members working tirelessly to keep everyone united.

Chan, who is the Coordinating Minister for Public Services, reminded the audience that while the day is a time for relaxation and enjoyment, the hard work behind the scenes is crucial for their happiness.

The ceremony, attended by around 500 residents, featured activities such as a ceremonial cake-cutting, mass singalong, and performances. One of the highlights was an SG61 photo montage, created from 61 individual portraits of residents and grassroots volunteers across the Buona Vista estate. This montage aimed to celebrate the community and its shared experiences, mutual care, and sense of belonging.

Chan urged everyone to work for a better future for the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of looking after one another, regardless of race, language, or religion. He expressed his commitment to ensuring that the future generation will have a brighter future than the current one. The event's success was evident in the participation of residents, with some, like Trina Ann Savage and Ivy Tan, expressing their pride in being part of the montage and their hope for future generations to understand the true meaning of National Day.
