‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ keeps record pace, ‘The Odyssey’ sets new high for Nolan

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continued its momentum at the box office, earning $144.5 million domestically during its second weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Its worldwide total has now reached $1.67 billion, marking a promising trajectory for the film. No movie has broken past this mark faster domestically.

In the United States and Canada, "Brand New Day" has grossed an impressive $655.1 million to date. It surpassed "Toy Story 5" ($1.07 billion worldwide) to become the highest grossing movie of the year, doing so in just seven days. This record is not easily achieved; the previous record-holder, "The Force Awakens," earned $149.2 million in its second weekend in 2015.

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" also crossed the $1 billion mark, bringing its global total to $1.1 billion by the end of its fourth weekend. Nolan's epic film is now his biggest box office hit ever, surpassing both "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion) and 2009's "The Dark Knight" ($1 billion). A significant contributor to "The Odyssey's" success has been its strong performance in IMAX theaters, where it has earned $147.3 million domestically, making it the highest grossing domestic release of all time in this format.

However, "The Odyssey" still has one major market left, China, which is set to release it on Friday. Despite the success of these two films, the summer box office is still $14.8 million short of the $4 billion milestone that last marked a thriving business year for Hollywood. The summer is currently sitting at $4 billion minus $14.8 million.

Two comedies, "One Night Only" and "Super Troopers 3," provided some counter-programming but made little impact at the box office. "One Night Only," a romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck, received mixed reviews, earning a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it still managed to attract an audience score of "B+" from CinemaScore.

In fourth place, Fox Searchlight's "Super Troopers 3," the third installment in the long-running comedy series from Broken Lizard, debuted with $4 million in ticket sales.
