Spain checks 200 Italy arrivals in border controls after migration row

Spain has implemented checks on approximately 200 travelers arriving from Italy at the nation's six largest airports following a border control dispute with Italy over irregular migration, according to Reuters. The Interior Ministry conducted the checks on 199 individuals across 12 flights from Italy to Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante, and Valencia on Saturday.

Spain announced on Friday that border controls for flights and ships from Italy would remain in place until September 7, following Rome's implementation of its own measures. These measures were attributed to the mass migration surge of 72,000 people to Ceuta, Spain's North African territory, on July 30.

Italy has suspended the Schengen Area's border-free arrangements with Spain since August 1 and stated that it would maintain border controls until at least August 15. The measure targets non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air or sea. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed hope that the Schengen suspension would be lifted soon once the risk subsides.

The Schengen Area permits passport-free travel across 29 European countries, with member states permitted to temporarily reintroduce border controls for security or public-order reasons.
