Rep Dasuki Urges INEC to Hold 2027 General Election in One Day, Warns of Loophole in Section 63 (2) of Electoral Act

Rep Abdussamad Dasuki has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold the 2027 general election on a single day rather than in staggered phases. Dasuki, Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, expressed concerns that the current staggered arrangement could jeopardize the integrity of the election by allowing unmarked ballot papers to be counted.

He proposed holding both federal and state elections on a single day, ideally in January or February 2027, to save economic losses and reduce the financial burden on the government. This approach would also lessen the need for multiple election-related trips, especially considering the country's security challenges. Dasuki further criticized Section 63(2) of the Electoral Act, warning that it could enable the use of unauthorised or fake ballot papers. He called for the provision to be removed to prevent such potential abuse of the electoral process.
