Qatar's Sheikha Asma summits Gasherbrum II

Qatari mountaineer Sheikha Asma bint Thani al-Thani has successfully reached the summit of Gasherbrum II, an 8,000-meter peak in the Karakoram mountain range shared by Pakistan and China. This accomplishment marks her 11th such peak, bringing her closer to her goal of scaling all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters worldwide. Gasherbrum II stands amid the "Death Zone," a treacherous altitude with low oxygen levels, freezing temperatures, and extreme weather conditions.

In an Instagram post, Sheikha Asma recounted the five-day wait at Camp 1 for a suitable weather window, the teamwork, and the stunning moonlit ascent. She expressed gratitude for her team's support and the camaraderie displayed. The team was careful to wait for her at the base of the mountain to ensure her safe arrival. From the summit, Sheikha Asma could see K2 and Broad Peak.

Tragically, she learned later that contact had been lost with the Broad Peak team, including Wang, whom she had communicated with just after reaching the summit. She remembered the waiting, coffee, moon, team spirit, and the last message to Wang, which she never expected to be her final communication. Sheikha Asma also conveyed her thanks to Pakistan for hosting her in the Karakoram, the region where she continues her ambitious "Beyond Boundaries" journey.

This initiative blends her mountaineering objectives with humanitarian efforts, aimed at inspiring women and young people in the region to defy barriers, pursue their ambitions, and transcend perceived limits.
