Prosecuting politicians does not mean Ghana’s democracy is under attack – Duncan Amoah to NPP

Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), has refuted allegations that investigations targeting politicians and public officials constitute an attack on Ghana's democracy. He emphasized that accountability is a crucial component of a functioning democratic system and should not be misconstrued as political persecution.

This stance emerged following the NPP's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration on August 6, 2026, where concerns were raised over perceived threats to democratic governance and alleged targeting of party members.

Amoah advocated for the continued operation of Ghana's democratic institutions, while concurrently allowing citizens to scrutinize and critique their functioning. He asserted that it is not necessary to equate all criticism of institutions with an assault on the democratic process. Furthermore, Amoah noted that he has not observed any instance in Ghana where opposition figures were targeted solely for expressing their political views openly.

The COPEC leader underscored the significance of freedom of expression as a fundamental aspect of democracy, affirming that citizens in Ghana continue to enjoy the right to voice their opinions on national matters. During an interview on Channel One TV on August 8, 2026, Amoah cautioned political actors against the danger of transitioning from legitimate criticism to threats or intimidation.

He reiterated that political discourse should foster vigorous debate while ensuring that statements made by politicians do not endanger individuals or undermine the rule of law.
