President rushes to review policies amid growing backlash from young Koreans

President Lee Jae Myung is actively working to overhaul policies that have faced significant criticism from young Koreans, as his approval rating within this demographic continues to be the lowest among all age groups. The contentious policies span various sectors, such as a tax overhaul plan affecting individual savings accounts (ISAs), which has particularly angered individuals in their 20s and 30s by eliminating existing benefits.

Additionally, 22 marriage-related policies have garnered negative attention, earning the nickname "marriage penalty" for disproportionately disadvantaging newlyweds and new parents.

During a meeting with senior presidential secretaries on Thursday, President Lee referred to young individuals aged 20 to 30 as "a vulnerable group," urging the reorganization of relevant policies to better address their specific needs, including education, employment, income, asset building, housing, and marriage. This call for policy reform emerged as recent polls revealed that Lee's disapproval rating among young adults in their 20s and 30s surpasses that of other age groups.

A Media Tomato survey, commissioned by News Tomato and conducted between August 3 and 4, indicated that the disapproval rating among this age group stands at a concerning level, prompting President Lee to take decisive action in addressing their concerns and revising the affected policies.
