PH must make reforms to stave off becoming opposition again, says analyst

Political analyst Wong Chin Huat warns that Pakatan Harapan must implement reforms to avoid becoming the opposition again in the next general election. The effectiveness of identity politics in mobilising voters poses a significant challenge for the current coalition, according to Wong. In an interview, he stated that the ability of Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional to consolidate votes would be a major hurdle for Pakatan Harapan.

Wong advised that as Pakatan Harapan is currently in power, it should leverage this position to create a more balanced political landscape for all parties. If they lose power at the next election, there may be limited chances for a comeback. He cited the 2022 election results, indicating that around 28 out of 71 seats won by Pakatan Harapan and Muda could potentially fall to the two coalitions if supporters consolidate their votes.

Wong also noted that even with low voter turnout, Pakatan Harapan might only retain fewer than 43 seats.
