Pentagon asks defence firms to accelerate weapons production

The Pentagon has urged major U.S. defense companies to speed up the production and delivery of crucial weapons systems in response to the escalating Iran war, according to Bloomberg. Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg directed this request in a letter to firms such as Boeing Co, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Raytheon Technologies Corp, reported the Washington Post.

Feinberg emphasized that traditional development timelines are unsuitable and stressed the need for immediate acceleration of program schedules and production capacity.

The Pentagon is requesting faster procurement and enhanced production of key equipment, including wide-area surveillance tools, air-defense sensors, missile interceptors, and tracking systems. U.S. military inventories have come under increased scrutiny as the military engages in operations against Iran and intercepts drones and missiles threatening American bases in the Middle East.

President Donald Trump dismissed claims of a munitions shortage on Thursday, asserting that the nation possesses "massive amounts" available. He acknowledged some supplies of unidentified systems were "a little bit tighter" but stated that replacements arrive daily. Trump did not offer further details.

Beyond the immediate needs of the Iran war, Feinberg highlighted additional priorities, citing satellite communications, next-generation air-defense equipment, and the Lockheed Martin Next Generation Interceptor. The latter is intended to safeguard the U.S. against intercontinental ballistic missiles and replace outdated elements of the country's domestic missile defense system.

The Pentagon requested defense firms to submit proposals by late August outlining more ambitious delivery schedules, increased manufacturing capacity, or a combination of both. Any production boost might necessitate the addition of workers, expansion of facilities, and securing larger supplies of specialized components. The request coincides with the Pentagon's demand for $18.2 billion in additional funding for missile interceptors, underscoring the financial and industrial implications of ongoing operations against Iran.
