Panvel-Karjat Suburban Corridor Likely To Be Ready For Safety Inspection By Year-End

The Panvel-Karjat New Suburban Corridor is on track to be ready for a safety inspection by the end of this year, according to the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). The construction firm has been actively working on various civil, cabling, and electrification tasks throughout July. These efforts are part of a larger project aiming to create a new suburban link between Panvel and Karjat, which will add capacity to the suburban network.

In addition to the Panvel-Karjat corridor, the MRVC is simultaneously advancing the Virar-Dahanu quadrupling, Borivali-Virar 5th and 6th lines, and station improvement projects across the Mumbai suburban network. Notable progress includes the completion of subways at Chikhale and Mohape, and the opening of Road Over Bridges 89/1 and 90/2. Around 4 km of overhead electric (OHE) catenary wire, 4 km of contact wire, and 32 km of dropping wire were installed during July.

The corridor's development is expected to significantly boost the Mumbai suburban network's capacity. Once the remaining works are completed, the project will undergo a safety inspection, following which passenger operations can be considered. Meanwhile, the MRVC is also focusing on upgrading signaling systems on the Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project.

These upgrades include signalling and telecommunications work at Kelve Road station, automatic signalling between Saphale and Kelve Road, and electronic interlocking systems at Relay Huts 3 and 4.

On the passenger-related front, MRVC has completed several works, including the construction of staff quarters at Vasai Road and Bhayandar, as well as station works focused on improving passenger movement. Elevated decks at Kandivali and Mira Road have been handed over to Western Railway, while a new east-side booking office at Mankhurd is now operational for passengers. The facilities aim to enhance passenger movement and interchange between suburban rail and Metro services.
