Online holiday rental bookings in Germany hit all-time high

Online holiday rental bookings in Germany have reached an all-time high, driven by a surge in domestic staycations. Home stays have more than doubled compared to pre-pandemic levels. In 2025, Germans recorded a record 68.3 million overnight stays, a 13 percent increase from 2024 and an 83 percent rise from 2019. These figures encompass short-term rentals and apartment bookings made via platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Expedia, as confirmed by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Germans are increasingly opting for domestic holidays, with domestic bookings more than doubling since 2019. In 2025, German tourists made 48.5 million overnight stays, a 15 percent increase from the previous year. When considering pre-pandemic levels from 2019, domestic bookings have more than doubled.

The largest number of international bookings came from the Netherlands, totaling 2.9 million overnight stays, followed by Poland with 2.1 million and the United States with 1.3 million. Bavaria remains Germany's most popular destination, attracting 10.6 million visitors, while neighboring Baden-Württemberg recorded 8.1 million overnight stays, lured by its famous Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Rhine-Westphalia was the third most popular destination.
