No room to hide for those who undermined Tabung Haji, says PKR Youth

The royal commission of inquiry into Tabung Haji, which lasted until 2022, has uncovered a web of political influence and financial mismanagement that cannot be concealed, according to Dr Taufiq Johari, a PKR Youth leader. Key decisions at Tabung Haji, the pilgrims' fund, were made based on political considerations rather than sound management practices.

Politicians occupied senior positions within the board, and this undue influence led to a net loss of RM1.4 billion in the 2017 financial report, despite a reported profit of RM3.4 billion.

Dr Taufiq Johari emphasized that those responsible for this betrayal can no longer hide behind their political positions or influence, regardless of their party affiliation. He urged authorities to track down these irresponsible parties "to the ends of the earth." The investigation should focus on three key areas: governance weaknesses, political interference, and the distribution of hibah (charitable funds) that did not align with the fund's actual financial position.

The royal commission's 252-page report, published recently, traced the origins of Tabung Haji's financial troubles to these political entanglements, unsustainable hibah payouts, and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's reluctance to challenge depositors' confidence in the institution.
