Nashik hit by 4.3-magnitude earthquake

A gentle earthquake and subsequent tremors struck Maharashtra's Nashik district on Saturday and Sunday, causing structural damage in some areas, according to officials. With a magnitude of 4.3, the initial quake occurred at 10 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a tremor measuring 3.3 on Sunday at around 5:33 a.m., as reported by the National Centre for Seismology.

The seismic activity was detected at a depth of 5 kilometers in the Bhanwad region, situated close to the Hatgad mountain range along the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. Residents in several Nashik city neighborhoods, including Surgana, Kalwan, Dewla, Chandwad, Peth, Dindori, and Niphad talukas, reported feeling the tremors, leading to alarm as people fled their homes.

Cracks appeared in the walls of homes in Bhadar, Surgana, and Nanashi, Dindori, as confirmed by district administration officials. Despite the disturbance, there were no reported casualties. District officials urged the public not to panic or believe in rumors, emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant and adhering to safety measures.

No damage was discovered in any dams during a subsequent inspection. District Collector Ayush Prasad advised that while people should not fear, they should stay alert and take necessary precautions. Earlier, the district experienced tremors on July 25-28 and again on August 6.
