Nakhon Phanom flooded, South on alert

Overnight rains swamped roads and homes in northeastern Nakhon Phanom province, Thailand, on Sunday. Emergency drainage crews rushed to clear submerged streets and protect buildings from the deluge. Heavy monsoon rains, forecast to continue across northern Thailand and Laos, delivered 107.9 millimeters of rain across Nakhon Phanom, causing water to overflow drainage systems and inundate homes and commercial establishments.

Roadways, both primary and secondary, became inundated, forcing vehicles to stall while attempting to navigate flooded lanes. Residents reported damage to appliances and personal belongings, while traffic was gravely impacted. The Mekong River crept up 20 centimeters to a level of 10.78 meters, though still 1.22 meters below the overflow warning threshold.

Governors of all 14 southern provinces were directed to heighten flood-preparedness measures. All provinces were urged to bolster their emergency response protocols, identify evacuation sites, and coordinate with relevant authorities. The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister were assigned to oversee the response efforts in the South, where two rainy seasons occur - one from May to October along the Andaman coast and another from October to January along the Gulf coast.
