Myanmar refugee figures soon, Saifuddin Nasution vows biometric drive for repatriation

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 9 — Preliminary data on Myanmar refugees, managed through the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) programme, is due to be released in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The Home Ministry, in collaboration with the Immigration Department, is conducting the data collection process with relevant entities.

Speaking at a press conference following the Star City FC Tour Convoy flag-off ceremony, Saifuddin revealed that the exact number will be shared with the media once it becomes available. The DPP programme is part of the National Security Council Directive No. 23 (Revision 2023) and aims to facilitate the government in obtaining accurate, comprehensive, and verifiable biometric information on individuals categorized as refugees.

Saifuddin emphasized that those recognized as refugees would receive priority for repatriation via Wisma Putra. He expressed confidence that legitimate refugees will be among the first groups managed for repatriation, adding that Wisma Putra will spearhead this endeavor. The data collection initiative extends beyond Myanmar refugees, encompassing all individuals identified within the country.
