Money talcs: Why J&J offered $5.5bn to end cancer cases

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has offered $5.5 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits alleging that its talc-based products, particularly baby powder, caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. These allegations have been circulating for years and involve more than 70,000 cases still outstanding. The company has denied these claims, stating that the products are safe and that the cases are based on "junk science."

Despite reformulating its products to remove talc and replace it with corn starch, J&J has continued to face legal battles. The company has won most of the trials it has faced but has still been forced to pay significant amounts in out-of-court settlements and some lost cases. In recent months, J&J has had some legal victories in New Jersey, which has bolstered its position in the ongoing litigation.

However, it has also been blocked from pursuing the Texas Two-Step legal strategy, which would have allowed it to separate its liabilities from its assets and potentially avoid the lawsuits altogether. The offer of $5.5 billion to settle the cases is a result of both the company's legal victories and its unsuccessful attempts to use bankruptcy to escape the litigation.
