Marbella beachgoers stunned as huge fish swims ashore

A massive fish startled beachgoers in Marbella after it washed ashore near the shore at Playa del Ancon on Saturday, August 8. Footage online showed the large fish swimming in shallow water, initially mistaken for a shark before rumors of a tuna spread. However, the identity of the creature remained unconfirmed. Local social media page fuengirolasequeja reported the sighting, describing it as a sizable fish resembling a tuna.

Still, no official identification had been released yet, leaving the species uncertain. Despite the initial shock, there were no reports of anyone being hurt or the beach being closed. Marbella's lifeguard service and town hall had not yet issued any statements on the matter. A tuna could indeed inhabit the Mediterranean, with bluefin tuna migrating seasonally between the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Spain manages bluefin tuna stocks, including rules for the 2026 fishing season. Marbella is familiar with the presence of large pelagic fish. An earlier incident involved a stranded moonfish in Playa de la Bajadilla, rescued by firefighters. While such sightings attract attention, especially during peak holiday seasons, there were no indications of an emergency or danger from Saturday's unusual encounter.
