Malden WA Wells Road Fire: Map and evacuation updates as blaze affects Spokane and Whitman counties

A wildfire has ignited in the 400 block of John Tye Rd in Rosalia, straddling the Spokane and Whitman County line in Washington state. The blaze, now named the Wells Road Fire, has expanded to roughly 600 acres. Strong winds are propelling the fire towards Malden and neighboring Pine City. A Level 3 evacuation order, signifying an urgent call to "Go Now," has been issued for Malden, while a Level 2 "Be Ready" evacuation has been declared for Rosalia.

Emergency alerts from Whitman County's Sheriff's Office have been disseminated via Wireless Emergency Alerts. Whitman County Sheriff's Office and local fire agencies were alerted to the fire's presence earlier in the day. The fire's rapid growth and the looming threat to Malden and Pine City have prompted law enforcement to request a community-wide evacuation.

The Sheriff's Office underscored the active nature of the situation, warning of rapid changes in conditions. They have assured residents to stay vigilant, monitor official alerts, and prepare for potential evacuation orders. As of now, Malden, a town with a population of about 216 residents, faces a Level 3 evacuation. Spokane County, due to its proximity to the county line, will also receive updates regarding this fire.

The Wells Road Fire's proximity to Malden, a community that suffered a devastating fire in September 2020 that wiped out 80% of its structures, adds a layer of urgency to the situation. In that earlier incident, the fire decimated key town facilities such as the fire station, post office, city hall, library, Masonic Lodge, and numerous homes, causing the displacement of thousands of residents.
