Live: Bulk-billing rates on the rise

The federal government has reported that the number of Australians receiving free General Practitioner (GP) consultations is increasing. Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek has defended Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following his comments about a gift from his Japanese counterpart. Albanese made the remark during a podcast interview with the Bush Deep podcast, where he gestured near his chest while discussing the melons from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Former Australian ambassador to Japan, Shingo Yamagami, criticized Albanese's interpretation, stating that the PM's comments were insulting. However, Plibersek disagreed, asserting that there is an excellent relationship between Japan and Australia, with Japan being a key strategic and economic partner. In response to the increase in free GP visits, bulk billing rates have risen nationwide from 81.9% to 84.1% in the June quarter.

The federal government had pledged $8.5 billion at the May election to boost bulk billing rates, aiming to make nine out of ten GP visits free for patients by 2030. The Northern Territory experienced the most significant growth, with annual rates increasing by 13%, reaching 90.8%. New South Wales and Victoria maintain the highest rates at 87.5% and 85.7%, respectively, while the Australian Capital Territory lags behind at 59.3%.
