Lions sign Josh Dobbs as backup QB after Teddy Bridgewater retires

After quarterback Teddy Bridgewater announced his retirement, the Detroit Lions swiftly found his replacement. On August 9, the Lions signed veteran Josh Dobbs to a one-year contract. Dobbs, a fourth-round pick from Tennessee in 2017, has a history with the Lions, including a month on the practice squad in 2022. He made eight starts under Lions' offensive coordinator Drew Petzing during his stints with the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals.

A 31-year-old backup, Dobbs completed 62.8% of his passes in his career, tallying eight touchdowns and five interceptions during his time with the Cardinals. Last season, he appeared in four games as a backup for the New England Patriots. Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed satisfaction with the team's backup options, highlighting rookie Luke Altmyer's growth while emphasizing the need for a veteran backup to replace Bridgewater. The Lions plan to add a veteran quarterback to bolster their roster further.
