Large-scale operation planned for Kinahan arrival

Daniel Kinahan, a 49-year-old criminal mastermind, arrived in Ireland via a Government jet from Dubai, following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates. The 49-year-old was swiftly taken into custody upon landing at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, Co Dublin, after being arrested by Gardaí on the basis of an arrest warrant. Upon arriving at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin to face charges, Kinahan appeared before a panel of three judges, who had been assigned to hear his case.

Kinahan was charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017. He was brought directly from Casement Aerodrome where he was arrested, having arrived on a Government jet. The court heard that Gardaí had offered Kinahan options regarding securing legal representation, but he declined, stating he was taken in Dubai and isolated from Friday afternoon.

He had assumed a family member would arrange legal representation, but that did not materialize. Despite his reluctance to seek representation, Kinahan agreed to proceed with the hearing and stated he would organize representation later.

As a result of his arrest, a large-scale security operation was in place in Dublin, involving armed Gardaí, the Defence Forces, and the Irish Prison Service. The Prison Service had recently acquired a bulletproof and bomb-proof escort van to facilitate the safe movement of high-risk inmates, a critical asset in Kinahan's case. The maximum-security Portlaoise Prison, where Kinahan would be held, had also been upgraded in preparation for his incarceration.
