Korean football needs reckoning, not another apology

The Korea Football Association (KFA) has found itself in hot water once again following Korea's underwhelming 2026 World Cup performance. In response to the disappointment, the KFA has issued apologies, participated in a parliamentary hearing, conducted a police search of its headquarters, and vowed to undergo "deep self-reflection," increase transparency, and implement sweeping reforms.

However, these gestures alone are not enough to restore public trust in the institution. Korean football requires more than just an apology; it demands a thorough investigation into its inner workings.

The latest crisis cannot be solely attributed to a subpar World Cup performance or the contentious selection of a national team coach. Authorities are probing whether improper interference may have taken place during the 2024 appointment of Hong Myung-bo as head coach. Moreover, the KFA's management of the process has already come under intense scrutiny.

The nation's sports ministry previously determined that the association had violated its own procedures in appointing both Hong and his predecessor, Jurgen Klinsmann, although it did not declare the appointments unlawful. This distinction is crucial.

While an apology may provide some solace, it fails to address the underlying issues plaguing Korean football. A genuine reckoning is necessary to uncover the root causes of the KFA's shortcomings and ensure that such mistakes are not repeated in the future. Simply promising reform without concrete action will not be sufficient to rebuild faith in the organization.

Korean football needs to confront its past transgressions, hold those responsible accountable, and take decisive steps towards a more transparent and accountable governance structure.
