Kerala’s Calicut University plans ‘ASCENT’ to boost academic standards of affiliated colleges

The University of Calicut in Kerala is set to embark on a new initiative called ASCENT, which stands for Advancing Standards for College Empowerment and Transformation. The project aims to elevate the academic and administrative standards of its affiliated 445 colleges across five districts. ASCENT aligns with the university's founding vision to become a premier centre of higher learning in the Malabar region and is targeted to be completed by 2028, the diamond jubilee year of the institution.

The mission is expected to drive inclusive growth, bolster industry linkages, and sustain continuous improvement, ultimately fostering a dynamic and future-ready academic community.

The blueprint for ASCENT was approved by the Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran and will be implemented by the College Development Council under the guidance of Director N. Mohammedali. The council will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for approval by the university's Syndicate. ASCENT emphasizes digitization of administrative frameworks in phases to enhance service delivery, and aims to align the university and colleges structurally.

The project includes several key components: establishing academic excellence through faculty development and research partnerships; improving quality standards and student skill building via quality enhancement steps; and promoting innovation clubs, resource sharing, and grievance redressal mechanisms. Special packages might be provided to colleges that need to improve their academic standards.

By implementing ASCENT, the university aims to transform affiliated colleges significantly, enabling them to contribute effectively to Kerala's higher education sector. This transformation will ensure that colleges can meet the evolving requirements of the modern higher education landscape.
