Israel military closes Palestinian Christian village Taybeh to halt settler attacks

In a move to curb escalating settler attacks on Palestinians, Israel's military has imposed a closure on the West Bank village of Taybeh on Sunday. The decision, according to the military, is aimed at preventing such assaults and maintaining order in the area. However, the closure applies exclusively to Israelis, not Palestinians.

The IDF spokesperson stated that the military would deploy soldiers upon receiving any report of violations to disperse gatherings and detain suspects, thereby safeguarding residents and preserving order.

Taybeh, a Palestinian Christian village, is one of the few remaining Christian communities in the West Bank and has garnered international attention. It was recently visited by the Greek Orthodox patriarch and the Roman Catholic cardinal of Jerusalem. The village is also home to Taybeh Brewing Co, recognized as the Middle East's oldest microbrewery.

The closure has sparked concerns among Western nations, with some countries imposing sanctions on settler groups following violent Israeli attacks on Palestinians. In June, Israeli settlers allegedly obstructed Palestinians attempting to extinguish a large fire near Taybeh, a situation corroborated by Palestinian civil defense firefighters and a local priest. This incident is part of a persistent pattern of intimidation and unjustified violence against Palestinians, severely undermining their fundamental rights.

A UN inquiry released on Tuesday revealed that Israeli authorities have been directly involved in settler attacks leading to the deaths, injuries, and displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank. A significant portion of Taybeh falls under Area B, a category where the Palestinian Authority manages civil administration, but security control is coordinated with Israeli authorities.

Taybeh is home to approximately 50,000 Palestinian Christians, a community with roots dating back to antiquity in a region that houses many of the faith's most sacred sites.
