Inside KL’s zine scene: How DIY publishing is bringing creators from across Asia together

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a hub for diverse creative communities, including a thriving zine scene. Zines are self-published magazines, booklets, posters and more, created by DIY enthusiasts. Kuala Lumpur Zine Etc, a zine fair, returned this year for a three-day event at Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, attracting more than 1,000 attendees last year.

Organiser Krystie Ng said the event aims to promote zine culture, self-publishing, and the DIY spirit, providing a space for creators to exchange ideas and connect with one another. The growing interest in zines reflects a trend towards self-publishing across Asia, as traditional publication avenues become harder to access. Many creators appreciate the freedom zines offer, allowing them to decide what to say, how to present it, and who to reach without relying on conventional publishing channels.

The first day of this year's fair drew over 100 people, with organisers predicting continued growth. International vendors, such as Hong Kong-based Mi Spacium Culture and China-based Tofu Stand, showcased their work alongside Malaysian creators, creating a meeting point for local and global creators.
