Indonesia Targets 2026 Reactivation of Game Rating System After Evaluation

The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has announced its plan to reestablish the Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS) by 2026. This decision follows an extensive evaluation process, which will encompass both the system and its associated policies. Tita Ayuditya Surya, the head of Kemkomdigi's Game Ecosystem Development Team, shared these details during a recent press interview in Jakarta.

Following a postponement back in April 2026, the Ministry undertook a thorough evaluation involving numerous stakeholders from the gaming industry and those affected by the proposed policy. Industry associations, such as the Indonesian Games Association (AGI), participated from the outset. Additionally, government bodies like the Ministry of Creative Economy (Kemenekraf) and the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA) have been involved, recognizing gaming's role within the creative economy and its impact on children.

Parents' groups, representing the broader public, are also part of the evaluation process, reflecting the system's significant implications for players of all ages. Kemkomdigi is currently conducting a meticulous assessment to ensure the system operates effectively and satisfies public needs upon its reactivation.

The decision to delay the IGRS implementation arose from public concerns over incorrect IGRS ratings displayed on the Steam distribution platform. To address this issue, Kemkomdigi assembled a special investigation team to scrutinize every facet of the IGRS implementation, from the system and processes to governance. Despite the suspension, Kemkomdigi has maintained that it will not block or restrict access to unrated games presently circulating in Indonesia.
