HAL revives Su-30MKI production at Nashik

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is set to resume Su-30MKI fighter jet production at its Nashik facility, with a total of 12 new aircraft expected to be delivered by 2029. Traditionally known for manufacturing Russian-origin fighter aircraft, the Nashik facility is now also producing the indigenous light combat aircraft. The first new Su-30MKI is expected to be delivered in 2027-28.

Under the current plans, HAL will replace the 12 jets lost in accidents since 2024. This ₹11,000-crore order will see the manufacturer incorporate over 50% indigenous content into the jets. Additionally, HAL is planning a ₹60,000-crore upgrade of its existing Su-30MKI fleet, which could be carried out with the assistance of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The upgrade will involve several major components being procured from the private sector.

The two-phase upgrade project is expected to begin with the installation of new avionics and radars, potentially including a new indigenous radar capable of detecting and engaging targets at greater distances. The older jets' radar systems have been a concern for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The first phase will also see the installation of a new electronic warfare system to counter incoming threats. Furthermore, the jets will receive new infrared search-and-track systems, enhancing their ability to engage targets.
