German interior minister warns of 'hybrid warfare' after drone bomb incident

Germany is grappling with daily attacks of 'hybrid warfare' from foreign entities, warned Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. This threat emerged after an explosive drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, according to Dobrindt's comments in Bild am Sonntag. The minister clarified that Germany is not at war, but is a consistent target of these hybrid attacks, which include espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert operations aimed at destabilizing the nation.

The extent of specific foreign actors involved remains unclear from the initial interview. The remarks came in response to a drone carrying explosives found at an airport in eastern Germany on Tuesday. Some German lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion. The Russian embassy in Berlin dismissed these allegations as a "fabricated provocation," asserting it as further unjustified accusations against Moscow.

Dobrindt, from the conservative Christian Social Union party, described the Leipzig incident as a 'hybrid attack scenario' and did not dismiss the possibility of foreign involvement. Meanwhile, Germany's armed forces recently detected two drones near a military base in North Rhine-Westphalia, prompting the interior minister to highlight Germany's growing focus on drone security.
