GB activists pay tribute to mountaineers lost in Broad Peak avalanche

Gilgit-Baltistan civil society activists convened a candlelit vigil in Islamabad to honor the mountaineers who perished in the recent avalanche on Broad Peak. The gathering drew a diverse crowd of individuals from various segments of society, who rallied in support of the families and communities affected by the tragedy. The Nepalese ambassador to Pakistan was also present to pay tribute to the fallen climbers, acknowledging their bravery, passion, and contributions to the mountaineering community.

Among the attendees were Pakistani mountaineers Nazir Sabir and Ashraf Aman. Speaking at the event, the mountaineers honored the memory of Sohail Sakhi, one of the young mountaineers who lost their life. They emphasized the courage, dedication, and love for the mountains that characterized the fallen climbers. The loss was described as an immense tragedy not only for Pakistan but for the global mountaineering community at large.

The event also served as a platform for other speakers to reflect on the significance of mountains in the pride, inspiration, and identity of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan.
