‘Funny, vulnerable and powerful’: SS Rajamouli on Mahesh Babu’s character Rudra in Varanasi

On the occasion of Mahesh Babu's 51st birthday, two new stills showcasing his character Rudra from SS Rajamouli's epic film Varanasi have been unveiled. The pictures provide a glimpse into the character's journey across different landscapes and time periods.

The first image depicts Mahesh Babu resting on a bamboo raft in a jungle, while the second picture transports viewers to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, Africa. In the Kenyan scene, the actor stands against a vast landscape, with giraffes and other wild animals in the background.

Director SS Rajamouli shared his thoughts on the character Rudra, stating, "Rudra was born to fulfill a purpose much bigger than himself. He carries a destiny he never asked for. He is funny, vulnerable and immensely powerful. That is what Mahesh brought to the character." Rajamouli added that many can play a powerful character, but few can embody both strength and vulnerability simultaneously.

Rajamouli also mentioned that the African schedule for Varanasi presented unique challenges and opportunities. The director expressed awe at the breathtaking views around Kilimanjaro and the Maasai Mara, which he felt could not be fully captured by the 1.43:1 IMAX frame.

Several celebrities took to social media to congratulate Mahesh Babu on his birthday. Jr NTR wished, "Happy Birthday @urstrulymahesh anna. Wishing you nothing but the very best always." Prithviraj Sukumaran echoed similar sentiments, exclaiming, "Happy birthday brother! @urstrulyMahesh RUDRA vs KUMBHA Can't wait! #VARANASI."

Chiranjeevi, also known as the "Megastar," posted a heartfelt birthday message for Mahesh Babu, praising him as "the pride of Telugu Cinema" and "destined to conquer the beyond." Megastar Chiranjeevi expressed his belief that Mahesh seems to grow younger with every passing year.

Mahesh Babu's co-star Priyanka Chopra Jonas also shared a special birthday wish for the actor, posting a picture of Rudra alongside the caption, "Another trip around the Sun. Before we travel across time. Happy Birthday Rudhra."
