Fires seen in Russia's Belgorod amid reported Ukrainian drone attack

Ukraine's military reportedly carried out a large-scale drone assault on the Russian city of Belgorod on the night of August 9, according to Russian Telegram media channels. Social media posts featuring pictures and videos allegedly depict fires in residential structures within the city. Significant damage has been reported at multiple buildings.

While the specific aim of the attack remains unclear, independent Russian Telegram channel ASTRA, based on OSINT analysis, stated that a regional FSB headquarters was situated between three damaged structures. Another building was targeted around 600 meters from the Belgorod Thermal Power Plant. Acting Governor of Belgorod Oblast, Alexander Shuvaev, claimed that the Ukrainian assault resulted in 13 casualties.

However, the Kyiv Independent has been unable to verify these reports or the claims made by Russian officials.

The city of Belgorod has frequently been targeted by Ukrainian attacks due to its proximity to the front line. Situated just 34 kilometers (21 miles) from Ukraine's northeastern border with Russia and approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, Belgorod has witnessed intensified ballistic missile strikes against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as Russia seeks to address Ukraine's limited air defense capabilities.

On the night of August 8, Russia launched an assault on Kyiv and its surrounding region, resulting in the death of four individuals, including a three-year-old child, and injuring eight others.
