Failure to engage ‘P’ gear led to car crash at KKIA departure hall

On Friday afternoon at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, a white SUV collided with a departure hall after its driver failed to engage the P gear while attempting to switch passengers. The 66-year-old woman driving the SUV stopped outside the terminal to pick up her son, but as she tried to hand over the keys, the vehicle inexplicably began to move forward.

Panicking, she mistakenly pressed the accelerator, propelling the SUV towards another vehicle before it crashed through the departure hall's glass doors and came to a stop after hitting a building pillar. Despite the extensive damage to the front end of the SUV and the scattered glass debris, no one was injured in the incident. The driver, who suffered minor facial injuries from flying glass, was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for treatment. Police advised motorists to always ensure their vehicles are securely parked before leaving them.
