Drones spotted over German base days after Leipzig bomb incident

Two unmanned aerial vehicles were observed over a German military base in Mechernich, close to Bonn, mere days after a bomb was discovered at Leipzig airport. The Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, confirmed the drones' presence on Thursday evening, indicating they were at a facility potentially housing components for US-made Patriot air-defense systems.

Military police were initially dispatched to the site before jurisdiction was transferred to local police. This incident follows a series of drone sightings near military bases or airports in European nations aiding Ukraine in its conflict against Russia. Russian officials have consistently denied involvement in these incidents.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt recently stated that Germany is frequently targeted by destabilizing actions, describing it as hybrid warfare. Germany is currently probing the circumstances surrounding the explosive-laden drone that managed to reach Leipzig/Halle airport, a NATO and German military airbase, and a key operational hub for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines.

The Bundeswehr has not disclosed details about the investigation into the suspected origins of the drones sighted near Mechernich. Reports suggest the base houses storage for components essential for maintaining Patriot missile batteries, crucial for Ukraine's defense against Russian ballistic missiles since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky recently implored allies for additional interceptor missiles, warning of Ukraine's dwindling supply. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump rejected a proposal for Ukraine to manufacture Patriots. A series of drone sightings throughout Europe last year heightened security concerns, prompting the EU to consider a continent-wide drone defense system.

Some European officials have accused Russia of orchestrating these drone sightings, a claim Moscow has dismissed as "absurd."
