Confusion as ISWAP eliminates four members over leadership crisis

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly executed four members of its Shura Council due to a leadership crisis, according to security expert Zagazola Makama. The four senior members, who were arrested last week by ISWAP elements, were allegedly killed by Ba Shuwa, a high-ranking figure within the group, at their Kwatan Dila enclave.

The executions are believed to expose growing internal disagreements and factional tensions within ISWAP, an organization active in the Lake Chad region. The Shura Council, typically responsible for decision-making on leadership, operations, administration, and resource management, traditionally holds a significant role in such terrorist organizations.

The executions, however, are seen as more than just a disciplinary action and could further weaken the cohesion of ISWAP's senior command structure. Security agencies are closely monitoring the situation in an effort to understand and potentially exploit the group's internal fractures, which could provide opportunities for security forces to leverage divisions and encourage further defections, surrenders, and intelligence disclosures.
