Combat Drone Explodes Near Moldova-Ukraine Border

On Sunday, Aug. 9, an explosion occurred near the Moldovan village of Crocmaz, situated on the Moldova-Ukraine border. The incident prompted a police report at around 1:20 p.m. local time. The explosion sparked a fire, with fragments of a combat drone subsequently discovered at the scene. No injuries were reported; emergency responders swiftly arrived to control the fire and secure the area. Forensic experts from Moldova's police force are en route to the site to collect evidence and conduct a thorough examination.

This is the latest in a series of drone incidents that have extended beyond Ukraine's borders into neighboring Moldova. Just a few days prior, on Aug. 5, wreckage from a Russian Geran-2 attack drone was found near the village of Văleni in Moldova's Cahul district. Moldovan investigators determined the drone belonged to Russia's Geran-2 variant, an Iranian-designed long-range attack drone.

The discovery of the Aug. 5 drone did not result in any casualties or damage, but the fragments were preserved for forensic analysis to ascertain how the drone had crossed into Moldovan territory.

The recurrent drone crashes coincide with Russia's ongoing intensive bombardment campaigns against Ukraine, particularly targeting port infrastructure near the Moldovan and Romanian border. Earlier this year, Moldovan authorities unearthed other suspected Russian drones, including one found near the border village of Tudora in March. That drone was confirmed to be carrying explosives. The police are now preparing to scrutinize the site in Crocmaz to ascertain the origin and circumstances of the latest drone incident.
