Cologne marches for queer community after Berlin Pride attack

Around 10,000 individuals congregated in Cologne on Sunday to march in solidarity with the queer community following a tragic attack during Berlin Pride. The Cologne Pride organizers had called for this rally two weeks after the shocking incident in the German capital. The demonstration commenced in the Deutz district, situated on the eastern side of the Rhine River, and proceeded to march towards the city center, surpassing the initial police registration of 2,000 attendees.

A dpa reporter witnessed a lengthy procession of demonstrators strolling along the waterfront, with police ensuring the safety of the event. The Cologne Pride initiative emphasized that mere words of solidarity are insufficient, urging the federal government, states, and local authorities to implement measures to safeguard and bolster queer structures and life, thereby countering the escalating hostility towards queer individuals within society.

On July 25, a 21-year-old assailant drove a vehicle into a crowd in Berlin's Tiergarten park during Pride celebrations and allegedly attacked others with a machete. One woman tragically lost her life, while 31 individuals sustained injuries, some of which were severe. The accused, believed to be involved in an Islamist attack, was subsequently shot and killed by police the following day after attempting to charge at officers.

Pride events in Germany are commonly referred to as Christopher Street Day, named after the location of the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, where the modern global LGBTQ protest movement originated. Cologne's main Pride march took place on July 5.
