Cachalia describes Reiger Park shooting as a merciless killing

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has labeled the double murder in Reiger Park as a brutal and merciless act, linked to gang activity. On Friday night, two Anti-Gang Unit officers and two civilian women were gunned down. The officers were on duty when the attack occurred, while the women were killed while attempting to enter a vehicle after leaving a shop.

Cachalia is set to visit Reiger Park on Sunday, where he was briefed on the crime scene. He describes some gang members as heavily armed and lacking remorse, stating that gangs are unhappy with the destruction of families and are turning to murder those who strive to maintain community safety. Cachalia asserts that the government is committed to combating gang violence and organized crime.

Over R1 billion has been allocated to enhance policing in gang-affected regions, although the army's deployment is temporary. Poverty, marginalization, and limited opportunities are cited as factors contributing to young individuals joining gangs. Cachalia emphasizes that safety and security are non-negotiable for communities to prosper and advance. He has appointed General Mkhwanazi to spearhead the fight against organized crime.
