Burnham to unveil new cost of living measures on UK tour

Prime Minister Andy Burnham will begin a nationwide tour on Monday to listen to citizens' concerns about rising living costs and introduce a series of new policies aimed at providing financial assistance. The tour is meant to promote Burnham's ten-year plan for the UK and highlight his initiatives to alleviate the burden of everyday expenses.

Among the proposed measures is a 20% reduction in business rates for pubs and other hospitality establishments, as well as a £2 maximum fare for bus rides. These steps are part of Burnham's broader strategy to "give people some room to breathe." The Prime Minister's spokesman emphasized that Burnham intends to "get out of Westminster and meet people where they are," believing that Westminster has become accustomed to accepting common frustrations, such as hidden pricing and overcharging, as an unavoidable part of life.

Burnham's tour will also center on strategies to enhance high streets. However, opposition parties have criticized the announced policies as insufficient. Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride accused Burnham of "breathtaking hypocrisy" for proposing tax increases and increased regulatory burdens while addressing high street issues. Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper echoed this sentiment, calling Burnham's efforts a "vanity tour" while businesses continue to struggle.

Reform UK's economic spokesperson, Robert Jenrick, suggested that Burnham should eliminate green levies and taxes on energy bills and commit to avoiding tax hikes during the upcoming Autumn Budget on October 28.
