Ayariga’s stance on anti-LGBTQ+ Bill may have influenced his removal as Majority Leader – Kpebu

Legal expert Martin Kpebu has posited that Mahama Ayariga's stance on the contentious anti-LGBTQ+ legislation might have played a role in his dismissal as Majority Leader. Kpebu, however, cautioned that his assessment was based on his own analysis of the situation and should not be considered an official reason provided by the government or the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During a discussion on TV3 on August 8, Kpebu highlighted the conflicting viewpoints between Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who argued that parliamentary procedures were violated in the handling of the Bill and suggested potential reconsideration, and Ayariga, who maintained that the legislation had already been passed and should proceed to the President for approval.

Kpebu posited that Ayariga's position could hinder the Majority in Parliament from attempting to reconsider the Bill in line with Bagbin and President John Mahama's arguments. "As long as Ayariga remains Majority Leader, it is going to be very difficult to go back and reconsider the bill as the Speaker and President Mahama are saying," Kpebu asserted.

The disagreement could serve as a "rational basis" for the change in Majority leadership, Kpebu argued, although he did not rule out the possibility of other factors influencing the decision. Kpebu drew attention to the global scrutiny the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has received, citing U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris's concerns.

He noted the potential ramifications of the legislation on Ghana's ties with international development partners, emphasizing that the issue transcends domestic politics. Kpebu suggested that a change in Majority leadership could open the door for a different approach to the divisive Bill, while being careful not to claim his interpretation as the official reason for Ayariga's removal.
