Assam Floods: Death Toll Reaches 100, Over 63,000 Affected Across 10 Districts As More Rain Looms

Assam's flood death toll has tragically surpassed 100, with 100 fatalities reported as of Sunday according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. The disaster has displaced over 63,000 individuals across 10 districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Charaideo, Nagaon, and Biswanath.

The Dhansiri river is currently above the danger level in Golaghat and Numaligarh, while the Kushiyara river is above the danger level in Sribhumi. Authorities have established 52 relief camps and 73 relief distribution centers to assist the affected population. Over 8,000 people have taken shelter in these camps, while 41,061 individuals reliant on the camps receive aid from distribution centers.

The floods have affected 823 hectares of farmland. Meteorological forecasts predict widespread rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh in the coming days, raising concerns over potential river level increases. Until now, Golaghat has been the most severely impacted district, with 58,750 residents affected. Sivasagar records the highest fatality count, with 50 deaths and 48,286 affected residents.

Jorhat reports nine fatalities and 25,259 displaced people. Charaideo has recorded 21 deaths, its highest fatality total. Assam's government has launched a door-to-door assessment of the damage in the four worst-hit districts, starting on August 9. The assessment aims to ensure every affected household receives relief and the maximum permissible funds are allocated by September 10.
