Alleged cartel boss Kinahan extradited from UAE to Ireland

Dubai authorities extradited Daniel Kinahan, a 49-year-old Irishman accused of leading a vast criminal enterprise, to Ireland for trial, according to the UAE's official media. Kinahan allegedly ran a transnational cartel responsible for drug smuggling, money laundering, and murder, according to prosecutors. The UAE and Ireland discussed his extradition during a recent phone call, and he was formally requested to face charges for offenses related to organized crime, murder, and illicit drug trafficking.

Kinahan was arrested in Dubai in April following an Irish warrant for serious organized crime offenses and had lost appeals against extradition. The transnational group, known as the Kinahan Organised Crime Group (KOCG), is believed to be the most powerful criminal organization in Ireland, with a wealth estimated at over 1 billion euros.

Kinahan would be the second senior figure in the cartel to be extradited from Dubai, with the first being Sean McGovern, described as a senior lieutenant, who was sentenced to 24 years in prison in Ireland in June after pleading guilty to directing organized crime and attempted murder. The US government had previously imposed sanctions on Kinahan and his family in 2022, designating them as running a narcotics trafficking organization active in Ireland, the UK, and mainland Europe, engaging in money laundering, firearms trafficking, and murder.
