A new historic achievement for Qatari and Arab women

Qatari mountaineering icon Sheikha Asma bint Thani al-Thani has achieved a historic feat by becoming the first woman to scale Gasherbrum II, a towering mountain situated along the Pakistan-China border. This accomplishment marks her 11th summit of an 8,000-meter peak, propelling her closer to her goal of conquering the remaining 13 of the world's highest mountains.

The 14 peaks are notorious for their treacherous conditions in the "Death Zone," where climbers face extreme weather and low oxygen levels. In an Instagram post, Sheikha Asma described the five days spent waiting at Camp 1 for a window of favorable weather, the strong bond within her team, and the breathtaking lunar summit push.

She expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of her fellow climbers, notably Pasang Norbu and Lakpa, who had halted to ensure her safe arrival. The summit’s panorama included K2 and Broad Peak, but the news of a tragic incident on Broad Peak, where contact had been lost with the team, including Wang, weighed heavily on her heart.

Sheikha Asma reflected on this poignant experience, remembering the waiting, the camaraderie, the moon, the team, and the poignant last message to Wang. She also conveyed her appreciation to Pakistan for its warm reception in the Karakoram region, where she continues her ambitious "Beyond Boundaries" journey. Through this initiative, Sheikha Asma seeks to inspire women and young individuals across the Arab world to break barriers, pursue their dreams, and push beyond perceived limitations.
