A soldier who was assessed to be at risk of suicide was reprimanded. The bereaved family of the soldier was compensated 20 million KRW in state compensation.

A lawsuit filed by the parents of a soldier who took his own life due to mental health concerns resulted in a court decision in which the government must pay 20 million won in compensation. According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, on September 9th, Judge Kyeong-eui of Seoul Central District ordered that the government pay 1,000 million won to each of the parents of the deceased soldier, identified as K, who took his own life at the age of 21.

K, who joined the military in June 2021, was designated as a 'worry guard' due to his inability to adapt to military life. Despite a change in his role after receiving advice from the unit's health counseling, he continued to receive harsh criticism from superiors and was not provided with any support such as adjusting his work schedule.

When K requested to make contact with his parents during a meeting with his platoon leader, the request was ignored. In October of the same year, K was designated as a 'supporting guard' who should receive special management from the company commander. However, the company commander failed to recognize this and subjected K to severe criticism, leading to his suicide several days later.
