Zelenskyy Calls for More Funding for Ukraine’s Defense Industry and Tougher Sanctions Against Russia

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for increased funding for Ukraine's defense industry during a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on August 8, according to UATV English. The Ukrainian leader stressed that financial support is critical for the country's survival, as it currently confronts numerous challenges.

Zelenskyy highlighted that while Ukraine possesses the capability to boost its defense production, additional investment is required to achieve this goal. The president noted that Ukraine already manufactures a diverse range of defense equipment at a lower cost compared to various nations, but further funding is essential to expand production output by double.

Zelenskyy also advocated for more stringent sanctions against Russia, asserting that existing restrictions are insufficient. He pointed out that Russia continues to bypass these limitations by obtaining components for weapon production from multiple countries, including those that are Ukraine's allies. Zelenskyy emphasized that these components, which eventually transform into missiles, threaten Ukrainian lives and called for stricter sanctions targeting the supply of these materials.

Additionally, the Ukrainian president urged stronger pressure on Russia's energy sector, arguing that the Kremlin profits significantly from this industry and uses the earnings to finance its war efforts. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of enhancing Ukraine's interceptor missile capabilities to counter the escalating use of ballistic weapons by Russia.

Kyiv is actively collaborating with its partners to expand domestic defense production and bolster its own capabilities to protect against these threats.
