Wolves legend Parkes dies aged 79

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Phil Parkes has passed away at the age of 79. Parkes dedicated 18 years of his career to Wolves, beginning as a schoolboy and making 382 appearances between 1960 and 1978. Post-retirement in 1983, he continued to support the club through the former players association and was honored with induction into the club's hall of fame in 2023.

John Richards, a former teammate, expressed his sadness over the loss of Parkes, emphasizing the player's long-standing connection to the club and his role as a supportive figure among the Wolves family. Parkes, known as "Lofty" or "the big man," was described as a gentle giant with a big heart. He made his debut in 1966 and was instrumental in Wolves reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1972, albeit losing the match to Tottenham Hotspur.

Following his playing days, Parkes continued his association with the club by finishing his career in North America, with stints at Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Sting. Wolves announced in a statement that Parkes suffered a fall at his home in 2025, leading to the rest of his life being under medical supervision.
