Who is Charles Costanza? US Army general abruptly removed from top Europe command

Lt Gen Charles Costanza, who oversaw military operations in Europe, has been abruptly removed from his position as commanding general of the Army's V Corps, according to the US Army. Costanza, an armor officer, had been leading V Corps since April 2024. The decision to remove him from his post came nearly two months before he was scheduled to hand over command.

The circumstances surrounding his removal remain unclear, and the Army has not publicly disclosed the reason for his abrupt departure. Brigadier General John B. Mountford is currently serving as acting commanding general of V Corps. V Corps has gained increased significance due to its role in coordinating US support for Ukraine and managing the American military presence along NATO's eastern flank, particularly following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Army's removal of Costanza's command coincides with a broader reshuffling of senior US military leadership led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Costanza's sudden removal has brought forward a planned leadership transition, with Maj Gen Thomas Feltey officially confirmed to take over the command of V Corps in October. The Army has not yet clarified whether Feltey will assume command earlier than scheduled.
