The senators voted with a narrow majority for the controversial candidate. The Senate, led by Republicans, voted 50 to 49 in favor of Blanche. His confirmation was followed with great interest and overshadowed by criticism from his own ranks.

Ultimately, according to US media, two Republican women voted against Blanche: Susan Collins from Maine and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. Blanche has been heading the Justice Department on an acting basis since April.
